Purpose

The Know Your Rights Specialist is responsible for provision of KYR presentations and legal screenings for immigrants in New York City and Long Island. If the incumbent is an accredited representative, may represent clients before USCIS and EOIR, when needed.  

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Conduct Know Your Rights presentations, individualized legal screenings and pre-court orientation in appropriate language, most commonly, Spanish.
  • Refer cases of released youth to legal service providers around the country
  • Prepare and getting approval to use Know Your Rights including How to Prepare for ICE Raids materials. 
  • Maintain tracking information of each presentation and immigration applications assisted. 
  • Assist CWS attorneys and Legal Representatives in communicating with clients to ensure timely and effective information-sharing regarding upcoming appointments, deadlines, and other individual aspects of case.
  • Provide general administrative support to attorneys where appropriate, including document translation.
  • Assist supervisors in preparing reports and compiling data as requested.
  • Keep supervisors informed of complaints, issues and/or problems for timely investigation and resolution.
  • Work closely with staff to keep informed about immigrant issues and conducts legal research to support filed immigration applications.
  • Attend regular trainings on relevant immigration law and policy.
  • Represent the program at meetings and speaking engagements relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience with US immigration issues and terminology and with DHS documentation as it relates to refugees, parolees, asylees, and other immigrants preferred.

 

Other Skills:

  • Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish required.
  • Basic computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to work with clients from diverse cultures.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other staff in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • A driver's license with no more than 3 points is required as well as a personal vehicle for frequent, reimbursable local travel.

Special Requirements

The job will require reference checks, standard criminal background checks, and motor vehicle background checks.
