Purpose

The Senior Know Your Rights (KYR) Specialist is responsible for provision of KYR presentations and legal screenings for children in ORR custody. The Senior KYR Specialist will serve as a “shift lead” for KYR team members working onsite at the ORR facility, providing technical advice and mentorship for KYR Specialists, and logistical support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct KYR presentations, individualized legal screenings and pre-court orientation in appropriate language, most commonly, Spanish.
  • Serve as “shift lead” for KYR team while working onsite at the ORR facility, providing technical advice and mentorship to KYR Specialists, and logistical support as needed.
  • Identify children with potentially unique or urgent legal needs and promptly refer cases to Managing Attorney or other appropriate personnel.
  • Refer cases of released youth to legal service providers around the country.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of each child who enters the shelter and services provided and assist supervisors in preparing reports and compiling data as requested.
  • Assist CWS attorneys and Legal Representatives in communicating with clients to ensure timely and effective information-sharing regarding upcoming appointments, deadlines, and other individual aspects of case.
  • Provide general administrative support to attorneys where appropriate, including document translation.
  • Keep supervisors informed of complaints, issues and/or problems for timely investigation and resolution.
  • Attend regular trainings to stay informed about relevant topics in immigration law and policy affecting detained youth.
  • Represent the program at meetings and speaking engagements relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree
  • At least 4 years of previous experience working with children/teens from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Experience in a mentorship/leadership role preferred.
  • Familiarity with US immigration issues and terminology preferred.

Other Skills:

  • Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish required.
  • Ability to communicate thoroughly and with self-confidence a broad range of information relating to program or department.
  • Ability to communicate detailed and/or technical information clearly, in Spanish and English.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including use of Outlook, Word, and Excel required.
  • Ability to problem solve and work cooperatively in a fast-paced, high volume work environment.
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • A driver's license with no more than 3 points is required as well as a personal vehicle for frequent, reimbursable local travel.
